Toasters for crispier breakfast

An electric toaster is a small electric kitchen appliance that gives you crispy and delicious bread. It is specially designed to toast the bread, the process, which is commonly known as "Making toast". An electric toaster can toast bread in 1 to 3 minutes. The toasting of bread products, including buns, muffins, bagels and any other type of bread, gives the customer a hotter, fresher and more appetizing menu choice.

The earlier toaster had mechanical timer that immediately indicate when bread is toasted but the toasters of today have a thermal device attached in close proximate to the toaster which makes the first cycle to run longer than subsequent cycles. This thermal device is also responsive to the actual temperature of the toast. In this process too timer can be adjusted to alert the user when the bread is finally toasted. It needs energy of 600 to 1200 Watt. Like other home appliances, some fancy toasters are now available with computer control atta chment instead of electromechanical controls.

Types of toasters

Toasters come in three varieties:
Pop-up toasters
In these toasters, the bread is inserted vertically in slots. There is a lever on the side of the toaster, which i s depressed, to activate it. When the slice is toasted the toaster turns off automatically and the toast pops out in slots.
Toaster ovens
These are microwave electric ovens equipped with a door on one side and a tray. In these ovens, slices of bread are laid horizontally on the tray then the door closes automatically. But to activate it, you need to press the lever. When the process is over, the toaster turns off automatically, but the door has to be opened manually.
Conveyor toasters
These are basically used when the bread needs to be toasted in bulk quantity. Bread is added to the conveyor and passed through heating element, which toasts the bread. It can toast 350-800 slices an hour, making it ideal for catering Industry and for large restaurants.

History of toasters

The toasted bread had been the favorite among the people since the time of Romans. Before an electric toaster was invented, bread was toasted over an open fire with the help of various simple tools. Then in 1800 , when Thomas Edison harnessed electricity, the concept for electric toasters also began to be developed.

Even after electricity reached the homes all over America, the electric toaster was still not a feasible, because the electric toasters of that time needed wires to reach very high temperatures, which were not invented by then. Then in March 1905, an engineer, Albert Marsh discovered an alloy of nickel and chromium, Nichrome, which had the properties to withstand required heat. Soon after this discovery, George Schneider, an employee with American Electric Heater Company applied for a patent for his version of the electric toaster. After this there was no end to the companies introducing their own versions of toasters.

In 1919, Charles Strite inve nted the improved version of automatic or pop-up toasters, which was a great success. By the 1960's, the toasters reached each and every household. A heat-resistant plastic and microchip controls began to be used for manufacturing toasters , making them more economical and efficient.

Maintenance of a toaster

There are often complaints of toasters getting out of order. Mainly toaster stops functioning when food particles interfere with its operation. Excess pieces of bread falls into the base of the toaster obstructing carriage movement, therefore most of the toasters have large crumb tray and door at its bottom, which can be taken out easily to release the food particles left in the bottom of the toaster. This cleaning of toaster should be done at least once a week to ensure that food particles do not continuously jam the mechanism or cause shorting out of the electronic components. It is necessary rather than having to recalibrate the thermostat. Before the cleaning; make sure the toaster i s cool.

In most toasters, there is a bracket from the control knob with a calibration knob, screw, or nut, which can be turned to recalibrate the thermostat. If you move the bracket toward the solenoid switch, it will shorten the toasting cycle, and moving away from the solenoid switch will lengthen the cycle. You can adjust the cycle to make the toast lighten and dark. By shortening the cycle the toast gets darker and lengthening the cycle the toast becomes lighter.

Thus if you are in a hurry, going to office in the morning, or children getting late for school, toasters come as a miracle for you. Prepare the toasts and appease their appetite.
